About The Man Behind The Dream

The Patron

Bothata’s life story is a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and a commitment to positively impact. From his challenging upbringing to his unwavering dedication to helping others, he serves as an inspiring example of how personal experiences can drive individuals to create change in their communities.

Background

Bothata Mahlala, born in 1969, is from the humble village in Mount Moorisi, where he was raised in a family that faced extreme poverty, far more pronounced than any other family in the community. His early life experiences have had a profound impact on his journey and the person he has become.

Family

Bothata’s mother worked tirelessly as a street vendor, selling apples at the Mount Moorosi taxi rank. However, before this, she had been employed as a cook at Mokotjomela Primary School, the very school Bothata attended during his primary education. The women who served as cooks at schools during that era may had a genuine dedication to feeding the students, but they were known to come from poor backgrounds, and this early exposure to his mother’s work had a lasting impact on Bothata’s character.

Making a Difference

Bothata’s impact on his community is undeniable. He has dedicated himself to providing school shoes to children who cannot afford them, ensuring that they don’t have to walk to school barefooted. Annually, he donates thousands of pairs of school shoes to needy children in the Mount Moorosi constituency, spanning approximately 32 schools. His donations are based on the actual needs of each school, ensuring that the most vulnerable students receive the help they require.

Challenges and Humility

Bothata’s childhood was marked by hardships that deeply
affected him. Seeing his mother serve food to other students during lunchtime made him acutely aware of his family’s financial struggles, and he often felt less than human in those moments. This early adversity left an indelible mark on his character, and he attributes his humility to these formative experiences.

Defining Moment

One pivotal incident that left a lasting impact on Bothata’s life was when his primary school organized a year-end picnic. The school offered to lend money to students who couldn’t afford to attend. Unfortunately, Bothata was singled out and told that his parents wouldn’t be able to repay the loan, so, he couldn’t go. This experience deeply humbled him and instilled a strong work ethic and humility character traits.

Commitment of Helping Others

Despite facing numerous challenges in his own education, Bothata made a solemn promise to himself and to God. Alone, he prayed for life, strength, and courage, vowing to reduce the number of children who faced expulsion from school due to financial difficulties. This commitment has guided him throughout his life.

Educational Journey

Bothata began his academic journey at Mokotjomela Primary School, and from there, he continued his education at Maseribane High School, where he completed his secondary and high school studies. His educational path was marked by numerous challenges, but his determination to overcome them remained unwavering.
